gill sans: type specimen zine

Date: March, 2021

There are a lot of stories, background, and history surrounding Gill Sans. It originated from the UK, and is the logo for BBC and British Railways. In my design, I incorporate the elements of the UK culture and colours, as well as West Sussex where Eric Gill (designer of Gill Sans) lived most of his life. The type specimen will convey a classic, retro, and minimal look that is reminiscent of its country of origin.

Interestingly, Eric Gill’s teacher was the designer of the London Underground typeface, so naturally Gill Sans has similarities with the London Underground typeface. I aim to include elements of the London Underground into my design, through the system of Underground station maps to represent the page numbers of my specimen zine - each page represents a ‘stop’/’station’ in this typographic trip back to West Sussex.
